It is easy to do things in Nassau and not spend too much. Junkanoo Beach is near the cruise piers and free to use. Get off the ship and head to the right looking for the British Colonial Hilton. The beach is near it on West Bay St. Farther down the road (not too far) is Fish Fry, which is a place with local restaurants serving authentic Bahamian food. Google map it and you'll see.
if you want to see the island, get on the #10 jitney, it is the city bus. likes like a mini bus. It will take you all over the island. you will see the neighborhoods, the real nassau, a few yrs ago it use to cost 1 dollar every time you got off. I dont believe it is much more then that today. We loved seeing the island that way.
Catch the #10 jitney across the street from the straw market at Mcdonalds. Stay off any water taxi they are an accident waiting to happen
DSR.....Using the #10 Jitney (which comes along about every 10 minutes) is an ideal way to get around, especially to Cable Beach (and its Casino)!!! I believe the cost is up to $1.25 (Bahamian or US)which you pay as you exit the jitney. The dirver usually is not able to make change...in no case are they able to change large bills. It's a great way to mix with the locals...and very affordable!!!
Wheels87...Junkanoo Beach is a very nice beach, tending to get crowded at times, but it is only about a 15 minute walk from the ship. Simply go out through the gate and walk up to Bay Street...hang a right and walk about 15 minutes...there will be signs posted as you get near. There are numerous places to dine and imbibe your favorite beverages at reasonable prices. There will be panhandlers on the beach and they can get annoying!!
Great suggestions, but I can't believe no one recommended taking the cheap ferry and seeing Atlantis. Everyone should see that place at least once. They have an aquarium you can tour through..at least part of it. You can walk around the beautiful facility. And it's a fun boat ride there. Just a suggestion.
