Doesn't sound like a fun disease to get. Probably not as bad as malaria as far as relapses years later.

I haven't heard mention of the Chikungunya Fever since my time in South Africa some 40 years ago!!! Like Malaria it can be nasty stuff!!!

Note Well: Chikungunya causes a 104 deg fever for 2-3 days, will cause rashes and settles in the joints....in older patients the pain can last for several years...there is no vaccine for it!!!

Chikungunya Fever has now been reported in 3 cases in Florida in the past week...apparently it is spreading into the US from the Caribbean. This is very painful stuff and nasty if You catch it!! The type of mosquito which spreads it has already established itself in the South and is believed to be expanding its habitats into the North!!

According to the Pan American Health Organization there have been 55,000 reported cases of Chikungunya fever reported in the Caribbean since December. This is a major outbreak for this most painful Mosquito borne disease. Cases are now being reported on the mainland of South America. It has come a long way from Africa!!!

Other areas to be aware of are Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe & Haiti

I will be calling in at Labadee Haiti in a couple of weeks & wonder if there have been any reported cases from this part of Haiti

I have heard that the mosquitoes with the Chikungunya virus can be day biters.
Provided you use Deet or some other repellent will it be safe to sunbathe ?

Also the CDC warns of cholrea in Haiti...is food prepared properly in Labadee if I decide to have something when off the ship ?

All food served at Labadee is prepared by Royal Caribbean food service personnel from the ship since it is a private resort owned by the cruise line. There is no access to the property by Haitians who do not work there.
