scooters in St. John

I was planning on renting scooters while in St. Johns for the day (going to Truck beach, shopping etc). Recently I read a post that mentioned how dangerous it was to rent scooters there. Just wanted to know if anyone else has rented them for the day and what your experience was.

Welcome to Cruise-Chat! Yes, the roads in St. John can be quite treacherous, so unless you are very experienced at driving a scooter on narrow, windy and steep terrain, pass and take the local open air bussses. They run almost continuously, are quite inexpensive and an easy way to get to Trunk Bay or any of the beaches on the island. Most of the shopping is located within walking distance of the Ferry Terminal so transportation is not needed. Have fun - but be safe!

I would strongly advise you not to rent a scooter. I once walked from $5 dollar beach back to the ferry just to enjoy the scenery and thought I was going to die nore than once. Take Nancy's advice and stick with the open air transportation or a taxi. You will completely enjoy St. John. It is beautiful.
