It seems like I read a few reviews awhile ago on this Port and if I remember most said, "Stay on the ship or near the Port not much else worth going to see"
would this be correct??

Hi Janfred, You will find many different opinions about Costa Maya. Click on the "Find" button on the tool bar and type in Costa Maya. You will find many threads on Costa Maya dating many years back.

Janfred, the find button is a great way to get lots of info. For us, we went ashore and found the immediate area to be mostly tourist trap shops and a pool in the center with lots of young children playing. We did a quick swing around and back to the ship where we enjoyed our day by the pool..We try to do our homework regarding new islands before hand and then we can plan our day.

Janfred,
We really enjoyed our day in Costa Maya, we took a cab to Mahajual and spent the day on the beach. We went before the hurricain hit the area so I don't know what the town looks like now.I know they rebuilt the area around the dock.Hope this helps.

There are also some ruins near by, don't know if you like those. Chacchoben is one that comes to mind.

We thoroughly enjoyed our excursion to the Chacchoben ruins. We booked the excursion on the ship.

Chacchoben is beautiful if you are in to ancient civilizations.

As for the hurricane, they have rebuilt the cruise hub but it will take a while to restore the natural beauty that made Costa Maya so attractive.
Prior to the hurricane.

After the hurricane.

If you want I have found a lot of free information in this Travel Guide about Mahahaul and the Costa Maya. See the picture Gallery.

Thank you all,
At this point I am so hoping for a day under a palm tree, come Feb it will be just what the Doctor ordered ! I don;t need much to be happy at the beach but a Hammock would take me over the top

you must spend the 3 dollars to get to mahalajua, it is so rustic, not touristy (is that a word) yet and they have the palm tree you want. We loved it.
