Nancy,
I would definitely suggest you get off the ship and rent a jeep (very reasonable). The island isn't very big but the 2 sides of the island are so different both need to be explored. Check out the Natural Bridge and rock formations. You can stop at a number of beaches as you go around the island. Then when you return the jeep - head into town for some bar hopping or a great dinner.

I second the jeep idea - best way to see the island. It can be hot, windy and dusty, however so I would recommend you get one with AC and a top.
Also if you are looking for places to eat -For a great time and good food go to Iquana Joes. It's a good party spot but the food is way better than Carlos & Charlies. If you are looking for something really nice the Driftwood has outstanding seafood Yumm!! But, it is not cheap - certainly worth the money though.
Suzi and Shelley,
Thanks for the suggestions. I will certainly consider the jeep option. Are there any good beaches either of you can recommend? And what about one of the party busses? Worth it?
Nancy
I rented 4 wheeler Quads last time I was in aruba. Booked 'em shoretrips.com. SO much fun. Small group (4) in our tour, and those things are so fast! The guide was really cool, and read our needs well. He somehow managed to keep my rather timid in-laws happy on their quads, while showing me how to do donuts! Rockin' good time. (Oh, we got to see all the good spots (gold mine, land bridge, lighthouse, etc)too).

If you are in town and want a good lunch try Rumbas.
If you like, a cab will take you to any beach you name and pick you up later.
Eagle beach is nice because there are a number of palm trees for shade just south of LaCabana resort. Many resorts will allow you to rent huts by the day.
