My wife and I are leaving next friday(only 7 more days!) to the western caribbean on the Galaxy. One of the ports is Belize City, and we don't know anything about the city, but have heard from various sources that it can be unsafe, and to look out for "banditos". i was hoping that somebody has been there and can offer some suggestions and advice about what there is to do there, and whether the warnings we've received have any validity. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

I've never been to Belize, but a friend has gone there twice for diving. Very poor location, with virtually nothing to offer. You can go into the State Department web site for security concerns. It's pretty factual. No place is 100% safe, and some of these locations are really unsafe. We were recently on a cruise that went into Columbia, where we didn't get off the ship. The State Department had put a warning out about 8 days before we went, yet the cruise line pulled in anyway, so don't take it for granted that things are as they appear.
Belize has so much to offer, we just spent 10 days there and it's a wonderful place to vacation. Even if just for a day. Belize City wouldn't be my first choice to spend the day although it does have a very nice museum. The warnings for BC are traveling around in town at night. You're not going to be there at night so don't worry.
Belize has spectacular diving and snorkling (second largest barrier reef in the world. That's why you'll have to tender in because the ships can't cross over the reef. Shark-Ray Alley is a great excursion and if you can get one that takes you to one of the Cayes all the better. It will probably be Ambergris but if they off Caulker all the better. Less commercialized, friendly people and delicious food.
There will also be tours for Mayan ruins or cave tubing. Several lines are now offering horseback riding at Banana Bank. We stayed there and the jungle lodge is beautiful... and it's a great ride as well.
Belize has lots to offer. I'm sure you'll have a great time
One of my clients just returned from a trip to Belize and really enjoyed it. You need a sense of adventure, as it is a 3rd world country, but that said, it has some delightful attractions. The Mayan ruins are relatively newly excavated and uncrowded, the snorkeling off some of the Cayes is excellent, etc. You can take water taxis between Belize City and some of the Cayes (Ambergris and Caulker, for two) - Ambergris Caye is quite commercialized with lots of tourist infrastructure, if that's what makes you comfortable. If you are looking for something a little more off the beaten path, visit Caye Caulker instead. Expect intense sun and some bugs (sand flies on the Cayes can be annoying) but a great place to discover!
