Belongings while swimming

We're going to be in St.Thomas and St.Maarten.
We are wondering what we should do with our personal belongings when we go to the beach to swim. Probably Orient Beach in St.Maarten...
We wont be leaving 'valuables' on the beach, but we dont want our shoes, clothes, sunglasses, ect. to get stolen either!
Are there lockers at some of the beaches, or do you just leave your stuff on the beach...?

I don't remember any lockers on Orient beach. I think there were lockers on Megan's Bay, don't think so on Coki, may have been some on Sapphire, I know they're there on Trunk Bay (St. John). We've never had any problems, though. We keep our room key, money and id in a plastic container around our necks. We bought those through Amex, but they have them in dive shops and on board the ship. No one has ever bothered our clothes or shoes or sun glasses or towels or anything that we've left on the beach. We take a lot of snorkeling trips, too. Their crews watch your stuff while snorkeling.

Serious Cruiser, we have never had a problem with our gear on the beach while we are swimming but its always a good idea to keep things in a bag or back pack so that no one is tempted. We have never had an incident on a boat when we went snorkeling, etc.

Like penny said I have never had a problem. I have gone to many of those beaches solo. I pack my beach bag carefully, nothing of real value, recently Feb 4 in Cozumel at Paradise beach, I have NEVER had anyone go near my things. Kept an eye, asked a friendly stranger....took my most valuable to the restroom, my ship card !
