We are setting sail aboard the NCL Spirit in March for a Spring Break cruise. It will be myself, 23, my Fiance, 23 and another couple (23 & 24).

I have been on several cruises, but always with my family and we have always taken the pricey cruise line offered excursions.

My grandparents actually suggested that we do our own excursions, which is what they do. Does anyone have any tips for us. We are just looking to have a good time and not go broke. We plan to do one more expensive/adventurous excursion possibly in Belize.
Our Ports are Costa Maya, Cozumel, Guatemala and Belize City.
Any tips would be great!!

Cozumel: Chankanaab park is great--there is an admission but there is a small beach and snorkeling right from shore, concession. The dolphins are there. It is a short easy cab ride from the pier. Also there are a number of beach "clubs" where you pay admission to access the beach and non-motorized water sports or get free entry with purchase of $10 or so in concession. You could also negotiate with a cab to see the sites. Also check web site of Adventuras Naturales--we have used them and they were great and less $$ than the ship's offerings. Costa Maya had a beach right by the pier with some resort amenities (food, bar, massages). Don't know the status of this stretch of shore post hurricane last year. Haven't been to the other ports. We like Shoretrips.com, but they are not much cheaper than the ship's tours, however they are always higher quality and smaller groups.

Search this site for a given port of call and the posts regarding what to do there will come up for you.

Oh, Belize--we snorkeled there (the town was not much to see, but the snorkeling was great). You tender to port there, it is shallow and a long tender ride in. At least with a ship sponsored snorkeling tour we were picked up and dropped off at the ship. It is not a town I would go walking around in away from the strip of shops geared specifically toward the cruise passengers. People give cave tubing there a good review as a rule, and a few different independent contractors have been reviewed on this site.

Your grand parents are correct. You will save booking on your own. A little research is all you need to do. Enjoy the cruise.

Guatamala - when you get off the ship there will be tour operators right at the dock. You CAN negotiate prices and we got a really nice trip to the rain forest followed by a tour of the town for much less than the same tour offered as a cruise line excursion. You need to stick by your guns when negotiating, though.

Hope this helps.
