I think I read somewhere that there was a market for shopping right as you get off the boat. Is it called the Straw Market? Is it worth it to shop there or is everything overpriced? Can you barter with them over the price as in Jamaica? If any of you were going to Nassau on your cruise what would you do havinng been there yourselves.

Yes, you can barter at the Straw Market. It's a lot of t-shirts, clothes, items made from straw (hats, purses, mats, etc.), wood carvings, and trinkets. A lot of people like to go over to the Atlantis Casino Resort on Paradise Island which is a $4pp taxi ride. You could go snorkeling, the Pirates Museum, power boat ride, the Atlantis submarine, swim with the dolphins, or a island tour.

livetotravel - Atlantis is a must see on Paradise Island - It is that unique! And Bay Street, Nassau - the main shopping street - is just around the corner from the Straw Market. Attend the Port Briefing on board ship prior to your arrival and you will get a very good idea of just where everything is in relation to the ship's berth!

Thanks you two! I heard it was very expensive to eat on Nassau, that a happy meal could be like 25.00. how much does a drink like coke cost in Atlantis. I heard a beer is outrageous! If we decide to go to Atlantis and check out the aquarium and the pirate museum does it cost? But most importantly can you see the water park from where we will be? We will have 3 kids with us ages 2,6 and 11. If they spot the water park they will have a fit if they cannot go. We just cannot afford 4 or 500 dollars just to swimm a couple hours. I have always wanted to see the Bahamas to see if it was a great place to fly to and stay a few nights or just see it on a ship.

You can see parts of the water park from Cabbage Beach (the free beach adjacent to the Atlantis property), but not enough to know exactly what it is. You can tell the truth to your children, you have to stay there to use all of the ammenities. They do charge to see the aquarium, however, if you get a good cab driver he might be able to get you in to a portion of it for free. You can see some of it for free from the hotel lobby area (downstairs). Cabbage Beach is a really nice free beach and I think your children will be very happy to visit it. The day passes that they sell to Atlantis really don't let you use all of the facilities, so you won't be telling your children a fib. I didn't buy a beer in Nassau nor did I buy any food last year, but I don't remember it being that expensive. You're close enough to the ship that you could go back to get lunch, though. Usually, we just eat a decent breakfast, go out for a snorkel or tour, come back grab a bite and change, then go back out for a snorkel or shopping or another tour. If you want to stay at the beach all day, I'm sure there will be some locals selling beer for less than the hotels. The most expensive islands we've been to, beer was around $4/bottle, but I really don't remember Nassau being that expensive.

livetotravel - Being an avid cruiser I am among the first to say - If you visit an island -visit it the for first time on a cruise vacation! You will be offered many various (moderately priced) tours which normally will include one or more of the various things you enjoy most on a vacation (holiday is a better word). There is much to see and do in Nassau and none of them are unreasonable! There is always fine dining, any time of day or night on the ship and beverages on shore are not too bad unless you are filling up an oil tanker!

You heard correct livetotravel about the price of a beer at Atlantis, I think we paid about $7.50 for one at the lobby bar. Unless something has changed, you can see "The Dig" for free. The kids and you would enjoy that I'm sure. It is one of the aquariums on the resort. We were very lucky the day we were there, we just walked out a door and no one was there to stop us so we just kept going and toured the whole resort. We noticed when we came back that all the doors had someone there checking for proof that you were a guest at the resort. I don't know why there was nobody at the door we left from but it was a great day. Of course we didn't push our luck and try to use the slides or anthing like that but we saw a good portion of the resort. Also, I bought a slushy type drink at the Lagoon bar and it was around $10.00. Hope you have a great trip!
