My family are taking the Enchantment in a few weeks to Belize. I've heard so much good and bad about this port.

Can you get SAFE excursions to the Belize Zoo at the tourism village? Would it be better to book through the ship at the premium rate?

Welcome to cruise chat Glenn. We were in Belize in April. I would highly suggest staying with the cruiseline tour. You may pay a few dollars more, but peace of mind will be worth it.

I say this with firsthand experience. We took a cab on our own to Old Belize. Our plan was to have lunch there and head to the Belize zoo. After finding out how far away it was, and looking at the condition of the vehicle we were in, we opted to return to the ship.

I'm sure you will get other comments to help you make your decision. Just one person's experience.

Welcome again!

Hi Glenn. Welcome.

I'm with Carl on this one. Our family has been to Belize twice. We have never encountered any trouble or problems. We snorkeled both times and then ventured to downtown Belize for some shopping.
We walked some inner streets and passed school children heading home with their uniforms on. I get the sense that this was the "tame" area of Belize.
I have heard some stories about violence. But, our family has always remained safe there.
Book your excursion to the Belize Zoo through the ship. That's my opinion.
Have a wonderful time in Belize. The water and snorkeling are supreme.

Hi Glenn
We went to the Belize Zoo and we booked the excursion with the ship. We enjoyed the excursion because it also included alittle history and sightseeing as well as the zoo. We found the zoo really nice, totally different from what I have seen. The only problem was that we wished we could have spent more time there. Enjoy your trip and it would be wise to book with the ship when in Belize.

I would also recommend that you definately use either a ship excursion or a licensed tour operator. Gilley has a kiosk "inside the fence" and does local tours to the zoo etc.

However, if you are going a long distance from the port, I would recommend a ship excursion only.

Gilley and other tour operators are working really hard to get Belize to be like another Cozumel. They have the advantage in that English is the spoken lanuage there. However, it will take time for the people to learn how to be "tourist" friendly....and having folks come across the border from other countries (stirring up trouble) does not help.

You can email him for price and information at
gilleytours@yahoo.com His name is Gilbert Young. He is an older man with a vast knowledge and love of his country.

Have a great cruise!!!
