scooters in Cozumel?

My husband has a friend who told him we should rent scooters in Cozumel to go around on. Anybody do this before? How is the traffic in COzumel? We pan to spend part of the day at Paradise Beach, then go shopping. We would rent a taxi to go the beach. Should we rent scooters to go to the beach and shopping?

dbug, people do rent scooters. We always rent an open jeep. Just be aware that the roads in Cozumel are in disrepair and can be dangerous.

We were in Cozumel last year and another forum I found very strongly recommended that you did not get the scooters. Traffic was too crazy. A car or jeep is really easy to rent. Highly recommended to go to the eastern side of the island and a cliffside restaurant - Coconuts. I highly recommend the fish tacos!

dbug - We rented jeeps. You can make a reservation online. Some of the jeep rental places are located as soon as you leave the port shopping...so very close. You would not need a taxi to take you to the rental office.
The roads are really bumpy - still alot of fun!

dbug, yes, the roads are bumpy and full of potholes and there is loose gravel everywhere. You can't take your eyes off of the road for a second if you're riding scooters. Just something to keep in mind.

Just to add to lpjpane's post and agree. The risk is not worth the reward in my humble opinion. You have speedy drivers, roads in dis-repair, and add that you are in a foriegn country that is still in recovery mode. I never recomend scooters, but if you must and you enjoy, Key West is a better choice.
