Progreso/Cozumel shore excurions for "newbie"

My 17 yr old son and I will be in Progreso and Cozumel. Anyone have a suggestion as to what excursion(s) we should try? Is there shopping and/or beaches at Progreso that we can do on our own? He wants to shop for a few "friend girls".
He's asked about scuba diving in Cozumel, but he's never done that before. Any helpful hints would be appreciated. Oh....we leave today from New Orleans! :-)

Progreso doesn't have much. There a beach once you get ashore from the 5 mile long causeway - the dock is literally out in the Gulf.

You can do "resort" dives where they give you a short class and then supervise the dive - this is for those with no certification. Frankly I think it isn't a smart thing to try.

The last time I was in Progreso, I took a 2 hour bus ride and went to Chichen Itza...it was well worth the trip.....

you will enjoy the cruise so much. as far as taking a lesson and diving I am with Dave. You are not in America, things are not covered with standards like we have in America. At cozumel you can go to chanacanob and snorkel. I love it there. I think they do snuba there too.
