Hello, I am in my early 40's and am thinking of taking a job with a cruise ship in the gift shop or something along those lines. Any
advice on living quarters, meals, time on shore or deck etc...

Hi J1212, Welcome to Cruise-Chat!

This forum is overwhelmingly made up of cruisers, and we have very few past or current crew members here. You would be better served to ask this question on a more appropriate forum in my opinion. There are many crew member forums, you just have to search for them. I am just giving you an honest opinion, and hope you stick around for any cruising questions or contributions.

Welcome aboard,

Dwayne

Hi J1212, IslandCruz is correct. We only have a few crew members and they only visit when they're on break. The living quarters are cramped for crew members. Your hours are long, and you do more than one job. It's not for anyone who doesn't like working extremely hard, for minimal pay. The plus side is you do get to see some of the world. You get very few days off and when you have a few hours, you usually spend them sleeping. Best wishes!

If you want to work for the cruise industry consider working in their office. The crew and staff work extremely hard and young enough to adapt to the cramped quarters. Those who work in the gift shop also have to lift boxes when the merchandise comes in, tag, stock, etc. It's not an easy job. If you can't lift 70 pounds, you're going to have a tough time.
