Is it pretty common for a guarantee cabin to be much better than you had originally booked it at?
I would love some feedback either way....were you pleasantly surprised by your guarantee cabin, or dissapointed?
I have always done cabin assignment, but wanting to know the risks involved in guarantee prior to booking our next cruise.
Just wandering if people would say it is worth it to go in blindly and pay the lower rate.

This is a great questions. Everybody will have a different answer. I tell my clients that if they are looking to save money, since you do not spend that much time in your cabin, then if location does not matter, go with the guaranteed cabin. Yes I have seen some great upgrades, and I have seen where you get no less than what you paid for. Understand that if you purchase a balcony guarantee then you will get no less than an 8A balcony usually on deck 6, but it could be at the front it could be at the back. If you are real picky about the location of your cabin, then its best to pay the higher price and pick your location.

Upgrades also are dependant on when you book. Say the ship is sailing in the next few weeks, then chances are you are not going to get a great upgrade, but if its 6 months upwards before it sails, chances are you will get an upgrade. Keep in mind the upgrades are usually based on decks. Balcony upgrade means no less than 8A 6th deck but you could get higher up on a deck. 4A means lowest deck but you could get a higher deck. If you are thinking of booking a 4A guarantee hoping for a balcony chances are VERY slim on that...most times it doesnt happen.

Hope this helps you make your decision.

Keep in mind also you may get an upgrade but it might seem like a downgrade. Explanation: If you booked an inside cabin guarantee on verandah deck you could get an upgrade to an outside cabin, but it might be on Riviera deck. It is a upgrade because you went from inside to outside, but some might feel they were down graded because they went to a lower deck. I have seen this happen.

I have never done a cabin category guarantee before; that's clear and concise guidance; thank you.

I booked an interior stateroom "guarantee" 3 weeks prior to sailing and was bumped up to oceanview. (This was on Victory this past Jan)

PS We were also bumped up from interior to Ocean View in Sept on Elation as well, but that cruise was booked 5 months in advance.

WOW! rescue911chick, you seemed to have gotten good deals with both "guarantee" situations. Now, that is what I am hoping to get feedback from....passengers who have been pleasantly surprised by their guarantee cabin location, or dissapointed with their cabin location.
I understand going guarantee is quite the risk, but the feedback, either positive or negative is a great help in determining if that risk is worth it! Thanks!!

Actually, we got upgraded to a suite on the Victory after purchasing an assigned balcony cabin several years ago.....

We also are booked as guaranteed inside. Can you find out your cabin assigment before your cruise or when you check in?

Do you find out about the upgrades before the final payment date?
