They always worked for me. It really depends on how far away you are. If someone is in the back on a lower deck, and someone is in the front of the ship on a higher deck, chances are they won't work. It's not silly, we find them very helpful.

Buy your own and don't rent them. It is cheaper. Also note that some frequencies are illegal to use in some countries - and this can include both FRS and GMRS radios. BTW, GMRS radios also require an FCC license if you want to be legal for U.S. use.

Just please don't leave the radios on high volume with call alerts blaring. It is a cruise after all, and not a SWAT team convention.

We brought then with us a few weeks ago on our vacation, they were the type that advertise a 5 mile range, they worked awesome on the ship. kids felt some freedom but we new they were only a click away. you said "with children or spouses " how many spouses your bringing might be a fun cruise to be on?? just teasing, have a great trip

i have the 15 mile ones,and to tell you the trurh they never worked well if the person you need is in the ship.

And if you go during a time when there are alot of kids, i.e. Spring Break, all the channels will be filled with other peoples kids, and you won't be able to tell when it is yours calling "Mom" or "Dad". That has been our problem with walkie-talkies in the past. We take our kids on Spring Break, and the w.t. are just a pain, and not really worth bothering with.
