I'm not a big traveler and I heard that film should not go through an x-ray machine. Will my luggage be going through a machine or should I put my film in my carry on?

It is best to put any film in your carryon. The new machines to xray the checked luggage has been known to damage film. The xray that your carryon goes through is ok and has never hurt any of my film.

Amazing that people still have cameras that have film.
I've been told by an expert at a store, that film cameras will become a thing of the past with in the next 2 years.

Yup, the bulk luggage x-ray machines will damage film. At our airport they specifically ask you is you have any film in your checked bags. I almost forgot about it and let 4 of those disposable sports cameras get run through.

So definetly leave your film to in your carry on.

I don't see film going away until they can make a cheap underwater digital camera or the digital cameras of good quality become really cheap. And then there will always be the photographers that swear that only film can give them the quality they want.

Yes, some of us STILL do have "camers" that use film. I actually have 3 that I like. I am in the process of looking for a digital one for my cruise in March, but I have been happy with my last two cameras.

As for film being ruined, I have NEVER had any film ruined that were in my luggage. I know they say to take it out, but I've never had a problem.
