I've never cruised with Royal Caribbean, but have friends that have. How do they compare? I've looked at the web sites, and the pictures, but what do you prefer? Please consider cost, service, food, and of course the staterooms. Thanks!

These type questions are really subjective. You can't really form an opinion without experiencing both lines. Just reading what everyone else thinks is not very valuable when the question is "compare X cruise line to Y".

With the disclaimer out of the way....I like both RCCL and Carnival. RCCL has more interesting ships with more "things" to do. Carnival has better buffet choices. RCCL has nicer dining rooms. Dining room food between the two is a toss-up to me. I like both. RCCL has nicer cabins overall, although Carnival has larger standard cabins. RCCL has the clear advantage with suites. Service is equal. RCCL has much better perks for repeat passengers. I think RCCL handles embarkation and debarkation better than Carnival. I think RCCL has better and more interesting bars. Carnival has glitzier big shows, but RCCL is closing that gap. Both lines are equal on the smaller shows and bands. Carnival intices me with some very good blues and jazz bands on their ships. RCCL seems to do better with the poolside entertainment. The casinos on both lines suck.

And there you have my 60 second comparison!

....and a good comparison it is!! Thanks again! I hope to try RCCL myself one day!

I have done both. I feel that there are more similarities than differences. My RCCL cruises were ten and fifteen years ago to the Carribean. MY Carnival cruise was three weeks ago to Canada. (enjoying a cruise on the first day of school the year following my retirement from 34 years of teaching.

I worried about this cruise because I thought that Carnival was going to be substandard compared to RCCL. (We chose it because of time and location.) The Victory was a beautiful, clean ship with wonderful shows, large well kept cabins, and the smoothest ride I've ever had.

My only complaint was that I felt the food should be hotter.

I did, however, really enjoy the Viking Crown Lounge on the RCCL ships.

Otherwise, you'll have fun regardless.

Based only on rumors (since all I have cruised is Carnival) I get the feel that the differences between RCCL and CCL is really all about the ships. Folks know that I cruise and I get asked about it alot when seeking "advice" and I find myself recommending a "ship" rather than a cruise line when asked about RCCL or CCL.

I have a friend that is going on the Enchantment of the Seas next month. This will be her first cruise and while I am a huge Carnival fan....when you balanced all of her "factors" (embarkation port, length of cruise, ports visited etc) this RCCL ship was the best fit.

So when looking at these two mass market cruiselines, I encourage folks to look "deeper" past the line and to a specific ship.

Thanks all for the opinions on the cruise lines. I'm sure it probably does vary depending on the ships, crew, etc. We have friends that have sailed twice on RCCL, but are joining us on the Carnival Ecstasy in November, so I guess they will give me their opinion also. I know we will have a great time...can't wait!

Next year we plan to sail on the Conquest. This trip will be a gift for my daughter, who will graduate in May '07 with a degree in Elementary Education! So.....I also want to congratulate Frodosmom on her retirement from teaching! Enjoy!!

What grade did you teach??

frodosmom 09-17-2006 07:00 AM

Kdg for 6 years, 2nd for 15, 5th for 4 and title one math for 9(which included remediation and lessons on problem solving and critical thinking.)

Good for you frodosmom!! Teachers are very special, gifted people! They are not appreciated enough! My children had teachers who were such an influence in their lives to this day...and they are 26 and 24 years old! I pray my daughter will be that kind of influence to many children!

Enjoy your retirement and good cruising to you!!

Just tell her to grow a thick skin and don't take every criticism of public education personally. That is, if she is teaching in public education.

My children also had wonderful teachers and I don't say that because I was one. When my children were asked who their favorite teachers were they both told about their elementary teachers being their favorite. My daughter's first grade teacher and my son's fifth grade teacher.

Good luck to your daughter.

I couldn't agree more.
