Interesting . Another way to reduce staffing and probably cause some problems which will require intervention by...the staff.

Some who know me may be surprised to learn I hate self-serve kiosks. At Wal-Mart I'll wait in a line for a real check-out clerk rather than use an open kiosk. I'll use curbside check-in at the airport rather than go inside to the kiosks.

it's to hard to check in by yourself on a cruise i would imagine..

Dave,
I don't like the self-serve check-outs in the stores either. It seems nine out of ten times I have to call a clerk. If they want me to check out my own groceries I should get a discount!!

Many years ago when the airlines first got the self-service check-ins I hated them. Clerks would be standing at the counter not doing a thing and still wouldn't help you check-in. They'd just point to the kiosk. Funny, you'd think they'd want to help you, aren't the kiosk replacing jobs??? So with the airlines the kiosks were the beginning of a plethora of cost cutting methods. Then charge for meals, seats, luggage, etc. Will this be the trend with the cruise lines? I hope not!!

Not really. Especially if you've already done the pre-registration in the computer prior to your cruise. All the agents basically are doing now is swiping your credit card.

P.S. Tim, I didn't edit your previous post I just hit the wrong button to reply.

to me there is sometimes too much confusion.. maybe they should start with VIP check-in and work the bugs out first. It sounds great, but we will see

I don't know about anyone else, but I like checking in with the representative. It's part of the cruise experience to me. When I'm checking in with the representative, I am being welcomed aboard. Then you get your picture taken and you walk onto your beautiful ship. It's just part of the wonderful experience. I really don't want that to turn into the horrible airline experience.

well the best and simplest solution here is to offer both. That way those that like talking with a LIVE person can do so and those that capable and willing to us a kiosk if it means not having to wait so long to board can do so also.

Like Cruise Fanatic said... most of the chore is already done when you complete the online pre-registration. Of course it will still require a real person to stand there and help with issues like they have at the airlines now, but they can have a bunch more self serve kiosks to one real person and speed up things for everyone.

Maybe that will be next. Step into the photo booth and press the button.

http://bestsmileys.com/lol/21.gif And they'd still charge $20/each.

What ports are they doing this at? All of them or are they just trying it out?
