Logistics Question-Port in new Orleans

I am going on my frist cruise 2/7/09-2/12-/09 to Mexico/Western Caribbean on the Carnival Fantasy. We sail from New Orleans.



We are flying into New Orleans the day before we sail. Does anyone have any input on a hotel that is close to the port? Or just a cheap hotel in the area that we can stay for one night?



Also, does anyone know about taxi rates to the port? Since we aren't going straight from the airport we can't take the shuttle.

Taxi from the airport to the port area (lots of hotels around) will be $28.00 one way.

Since the port is near the French Quarter...basically at the end of Canal Street..
there are LOTS of hotels.

Just to go one of the sights like Travelocity and type in Canal in New Orleans...a ton of hotels will pop up.

Some of them are pricey....but there are the kinds like Hampton Inn, Drury Inn, etc that are avaiable.

We are staying at the Maison Suites because there is where the Blogger's are staying. It is about a $10 taxi ride to the port. If you mention Big Ed's Evil Krewe...I think you can still get a room for $89.00. Last I heard they still had some rooms available...so if you don't find anything closer to the port that is cheaper ... give them a try.

There is mall called the Riverwalk....the port is at the end of that (just for a reference) with necxt to the Convention Center.
