Cruises discourage spenging actual cash on board so thats why they have the S&S card. They will many times put your tips on the card right away so that will use up any credit you have on your credit card. I would suggest using a credit cart or debit card since you don't know what you are going toactually spend during the cruise. Its only for purchases on the ship. Its basically a credit card linked to your own credit card or debit card. If you use cash to put down for your S&S card it can get confusing because it is drawing down from your cash you gave them at the start of the cruise and you may not have given enough cash, especially if they take the room tip out right away. You can always tell them to credit you back the room tip if you don't like being charged that up front. It also gets you on and off the boat and allows you to charge items on the ship to your room (or card if you will). It makes a whole lot more sense once you have experienced it. Many cruises offer account look up on the room TV which makes it nice to keep tabs on what you are spending. Kids get cards too but you may elect to not allow them to charge stuff against it.
