I wonder what the reasoning is for a special "Florida Resident Rate." I have heard this before. Is it because they live there they are more apt to cruise more or what?

I think it is indeed because Florida residents are close to the ports and therefore are more apt to make a snap decision to take a cruise - especially if inticed by a "good deal" that is hard to pass up. They don't have to worry about flights, hotels, etc. They can just pack a bag and go.
This is one reason why it is good for me that I don't live in Dade County. I'd be broke from all the cruises!
I live 2 1/2 hours from Port Canaveral & Miami, 1 hour from Tampa (4-5 hrs from Jacksonville) and would sail out of any of those if the price is right. With the exception of the cruise we did in Sept '06 the rest were all spur of the moment cruises that we booked because the rate was just too good to pass up.
One I did miss out on, which was a past guest promotion, was 4 nights on Sensation leaving 1-28-07 for $186 per person, all fees & taxes included! I was debating between Sensation 4 day and Victory 7 day, and think the 7 day was the best choice!! Just couldn't pass up a 7 day for the price I got

I use vacationstogo.com or expedia.com to research deals on cruises, and then once I find one I like I call the cruise line directly to book it.

Do the cruise lines give you the same quote as vacationstogo??? Do you tell the cruise line that price and ask them to match it or are the cruiseline rates the same automatically?
The 5 nights Bahamas does sound good, but last week, a 6-day to Western Caribbean (Freeport, Costa Maya, Grand Caymen) aboard the Liberty ran $149.00 pp inside stateroom with about $60.00 taxes direct from Carnival. It was a one day special because the rates were already at $279.00pp inside stateroom and it was fixing to go back up...which now it is at $349.00. I guess the rule - "You snooze you lose" really does apply when booking cruises.
We did secure a double balcony on the Verandah Deck for $509.00 PP on the Liberty... Can't wait.
Carnival's rates have always been better than what I've found online.

YES! Carnival Rates are good. I can't seem to find them any lower. Plus, our PVP Bernadine WORKS IT!!!! She calls when a special shows up or when the rates go down, she makes sure we know and credits us....puts some wine in the cabin upon arrival. I'll tell ya - I can't find it any better.
