I've just received the cruise documents and the instructions regarding 'checked luggage' is that each piece should be locked.

This is contrary to what the rules are for checked bags at airports, etc. (TSA guidelines).

I've always felt more secure locking my bags but don't want any unnecessary hassle if Security needs to have me come back and open my suitcase nor would I appreciate having a lock cut-off.

So..?? Is it locked or unlocked? Anybody know?

we put our locks on the luggage when we pick it up after the flight, and before we leave for the cruise terminal. our ta from carnival suggested it that way. works good for us.

You can now purchase TSA approved locks. If you lock your checked luggage with the locks that came with it, TSA will cut the locks off to check inside your luggage.
To be on the safe side, either carry valuables on your carry-on, buy the TSA approved locks or don't lock your luggage.

The wording on the ticket info is a bit misleading and makes it sound like a rule or policy. Some of our friends read it before boarding and took a trip to the store to buy locks! You do not have to have locks on your baggage, but they are permitted and recommended by the cruise line. From what I understand, they scan every piece, but will not open them. Any "suspect" bags are held and they call the passenger to security. Our friends had an iron in their luggage and it was held until they went and got it from security, after opening it.

tncruiseman, TSA opened all 8 pieces of our luggage last month and placed a verification card inside of each piece. Not sure if all airports are doing this. We went through Kennedy and LAX.

Andrea...You are correct that TSA does inspect and open luggage. The cruise lines just scan everything. Locking the bags before getting to the ship is what I was discussing, as we drove to the port on our last cruise.

No prob at all! It's complicated packing around all the different regulations. I just leave ours unlocked, carry insurance, and keep tempting fate because I know somethings going to happen sooner or later! I can tell you that nothing beats not having to fly to a port!

That's all good information so far. I always keep my valuables in my carry-on so really only clothes and maybe a few soda bottles filled with my favorite libations will be in my suitcase.

Would it be safe to say that if an image of plastic coke bottles appeared on the scanner screen then that bag would get opened?

I said maybe on the bottles..

I stongly recommend locking at the pier. It is not so much the carnival personnal but the dock workers that can get sticky fingers. We had a camera stolen by leaving it unlocked. Stupid us to actally have put the camera in at the pier so they could see us do it.

Use the TSA approved locks for air and ship and you can have the best of both worlds. There is also at least 2 types. One will show a flag if the TSA opens. I like that one and they are fairly cheap. $8
