Got a call from Carnival. The person calling said that there were some empty suites available and because we have a long history with them they are calling to offer us a upgrade to a full suite for $255 pp. We originally booked a balcony. Is this really a good upgrade or deal?

Thanks

Depends on the cruise. How long of a cruise and on what ship? On a seven day cruise I recently looked at the cost difference between a balcony and a suite for 4 people was $1500 ($375 pp) but the 3rd and 4th passengers are normaly cheaper than the first 2, so dividing the difference by 4 people is really not accurate.

So, yes its not a bad deal. Check the web site and price similar cruises and see what the difference is if you had booked a suite to begin with. That will give you your answer.

Jim

Thanks for the quick reply

It is a 7 day cruise on the Glory.

We are also curious if this the normal or a new procedure for upgrades to a different catagory?

Is it a good deal for you, 7thSon? Do you spend a lot of time in your stateroom or is it just a place to crash and sleep? Are they going to give you VIP benefits like you would normally get by booking a suite? If you just like to hang out on your balcony, then you won't see much of a difference. "Upgrades" that you have to pay extra for are not always upgrades. The decision is yours but make it carefully. Suites are often nice but make sure that it is worth the extra $510 dollars to you and your wife.

I'd probably have to do it, just to see what a suite was like. But it is extra money, so it is something to consider.

I just want to make sure everyone understands this was a courtesy call. I don't want anyone thinking they are entitled to any upgrades based on how long you have been sailing Carnival. The only upgrades available specifically to Past Guest's can be had regardless if it's your 2nd cruise or your 30th.

It wouldn't be worth it to me, I'm not in the cabin that much.

To me, upgrade means I get the larger cabin without paying more. It is more of an up-sell than an upgrade.

We like suites but then we tend to spend more time in the cabin than others.

Jim, that isn't an accurate comparison because we don't know how long ago they booked the cruise. Nine months ago the cost of a suite could have been a lot different than what would be on the website today. It can even change day by day.

Dave, I feel the same way you do. If the cruise line wants to give me an upgrade then it should be free. I find when cruise lines start calling asking people if they want an upgrade for XX amount; It's because they need the cabin your already assigned. They play the game first to see who will pay extra. If no one is willing to pay extra, then someone will get upgraded at no cost because they want that balcony. I'm sure you've seen this with the airlines how the offer gets better and better to get someone to give up their seat.

I don't really agree with the terminology of "upgrade" either. An upgrade to me is when I rent a Chevy Aveo, and when I show up they are out of them and give me a Mazda 6 for the same price.

People have been posting frequently lately about Carnival calling them with these deals. It really is an Up-Sell as Dave noted.
