I tried making it once and it didn't quite taste the same as on the ship either. I can't handle it but once or twice on a cruise. You have to have the ice cream to cut it with.

Dave, the chocolate melting cake is better than any dessert you had in a C-ration or MRE! I actually enjoyed the poached pear and the chesse sampler better! Call me wierd.
I'm with you, Dave. A cup of coffee and a dish of vanilla ice cream is usually by dessert of choice. I use the ice cream to lighten and sweeten my coffee instead of using cream and sugar . . . However, I would never refuse a piece of lemon merengue pie ~
Penny, actually all of the pound cakes in the "new" MRE's are good. My son in still in the USMC, and he gets some "leftovers" from field excercises sometimes and I have the priviledge of trying them out. Haven't seen pineapple upside down cake yet, but the pineapple pound cake is very good. Goes well after cheese tortellini!
I had the melting cake for the first and only time in April, and chocolate lover that I am, it was still a bit too rich for me. I didn't finish it, which was probably the first time in history I left chocolate on my plate.
Maybe it was the lunch that came before it, but I didn't have much appetite for it. I may have to try again (and again), just to be SURE I didn't like it that much.
