Jim,
I'll tell you one thing for sure: My mama didn't raise no fool-I'm leaving that business alone!

I am in neither camp. I am simply doing what I thought these boards were designed for....provide honest reliable information to people who are looking for it.

CVC depends on people being uninformed. It takes time to get the word out. There are folks today who don't even know what the Skipper's Club is on Carnival (as long as it has been around) and it isn't even called that anymore.

They see VIP Check In when they arrive and wonder...how do I get that? If they are sailing on a ship that has a CVC office, they hear that they can have that. If they don't know all the facts, it makes it all the easier for CVC to "take them in".

Again, since the beginning of time there have been people who are willing to pay more for those kinds of perks. And there is nothing wrong with that. I personally would never pay $50,000 for a wedding, but folks do it all the time. That is their right. All I have tried to do is to make sure that they make that decision fully armed with the facts. If that is how they choose to spend their money, then more power to them.

As long as there are folks asking, what is this "vacation club" I keep hearing about, I hope someone will be here to inform them BEFORE they get on a ship and under the influences of trained ICE professionals.

LHP-

Last time I asked CCL about the Skipper's Club, they never provided a decent answer. They said you got VIP check-in if you booked a suite. Last two cruise with them however we did get VIP check-in for a reason I'd rather not express here. But going forward, do yo uknow what they charge for VIP service? Or do you have to be a 10 time past cruiser (working on it ) or have a suite cabin? Like stated earlier, the best perk with CVC is the VIP check-in.. if I can get that by joining the Skipper's club (if it still exists) or something, I'm in.... They just don;t make it easy to understand...

Let me see if I can help.

Skipper's Club is the old name for VIP Check In.

Before Platinum members and Carnival Vacation
Club, there was the Skipper's Club. And the only way you got into the "skipper's club" for that one cruise was to book a Cat 11 or 12.

Basically, the Skipper's Club was priority embarkation.

When Carnival decided to offer "perks" for frequent cruisers and CVC...they did away with the Skipper's Club and changed the name to VIP Check In.

So the Skipper's Club was not every really any kind of club. It was just the name of the priority embarkation service you got if you booked a Cat 11 or 12 for that cruise.

Now...TODAY you can get the VIP Check In by doing 1 of 3 things:

1.Book a Cat 11 or 12 suite
2.Member of CVC
3.Platinum member (which is our family of four)

Booking a Cat 11 or 12 suite, only get the VIP Check In.
Member of CVC gets WIP Check In and Debarkation, a party, some chocolate covered strawberries, a spa discount and a concierge.
Platinum member ( on your 10th cruise) gets VIP Check In and Debarkation, personalized stationary, a Logo gift (cloth beach bag), canapes and petit fours on formal nights, free wash and fold service, free $20 entry into slots or blackjack tourney, priority tendering, priority change in formal dining seating, priority in spa times, a concierge and a special line at the Purser's desk. (bascially no waiting)

I may have missed a few perks. Hope that cleared it up.

Happy cruising!!

Dang! I better hurry up and book another 5 cruises on CCL! Those are some nice perks. Too bad there is not and in between level (past cruisers seem to be "gold") that gives some of those perks to us that have mutliple cruises under our belt...

I would be happy with the VIP check in at 5 cruises and then the rest at 10.

Oh well... time to call the travel agent :-)

I am a CVC member and about to use it for the first time in the comming weeks. My question is being a CVC member can I get an upgrade in cabins when I arrive at the terminal, if available? Also, how do I increase my odds of an upgrade if I have already been assigned a cabin?

I was lucky enough to be able to use both of my land based certificates for 7 days stays in Aruba, only because I happen to always travel in mid Sept,(weeks that include 9/11) and for some reason this week and ONLY this week has been available 2 years in a row now at a nice resort in Aruba. The resort books currently for $207 a night, although I found it for as low as $165 earlier this summer for Sept dates, so I like to remind myself of how lucky I was that I was able to get a good bang for the buck in a pricy place like Aruba using my $299 certificate. We liked the resort last year when we stayed there and were very happy to see it available again this year. So even though we couldn't use the airfare certs at all, the Aruba resort stays and the onboard perks make me feel better about this purchase. Don't believe I would do it again, but as mentioned already, before the time my package expires, I will be already getting CCL perks due to crusing more than 10 times. And the embarkation /debarkation privileges along with the other small special touches are nice. Now if the upgrade gods smile upon me when we get our assigned cabin in Oct for the Pride, I will credit CVC for that even though I don't have any assurance that I have any chance of my 8i GTY being upgraded on the Pride, since that would be an upgrade to category 9. But I can hope (ever the optimist..)
Would you mind if I repeated this information about Aruba to another board? There were many folks who were disappointed with the Mexico selections they finally found. If they had another option, they may be able to work around the date.

No problem, now that my trip is confirmed! I checked the CVC listings and saw that they still had a few more for that same date! If anyone from CVC ends up being there that week (Divi Village Golf and Beach Resort) they can buy me a drink a Jimmy's bar (Oceanview bar might be the offical name) on the beach across from the resort during happy hour for the tip on Aruba. (You have to choose Caribbean OTHER ISLANDS to find Aruba) And if they want to add on to their trip at the same hotel, they can bid on SkyAuction for additional days as this was showing up recently there(Last year I added on 1 day and this year I added on a Sat and a Sun since the 7 days was a Sun checkin and checkout but the best flight deals I could get for my area were Sat-Mon...So I had to "bite the bullet" and spend 2 more days there...(I say that like it was a bad thing) If anyone wants to do SkyAuction by the way, let me know because I can refer you and get a $5 credit and give you a code to get you $25 credit on your account when you register.

Doreen: Thanks so much. I will forward that on the other board.

Jim: I will let you in on a little secret. (probably not a secret, but it sounds neat to say so)

Ports are not important to us and if you are the same way, you can book a 3 day and 4 day back to back (usually for the same price as a 7 day or less) and get credit for 2 cruises instead of one!

We are going to start expanding our list of cruise lines and intend to rack up "cruises" on RCCL that way next September. The 3/4 days are cheap that time of the year and you can get to their "loyality" levels in half the time.

A guy I work with who does a lot of cruising with his wife, has been trying to get me to try SkyAuction. Can't hurt to check it out.
