first cruise

my wife and i are going on our first cruise oct. 19th on the legend. we have chosen a "cruise to nowhere" hoping we can determine at the end whether cruising is for us or not.
this may sound stupid, but i can't get a straight answer from our cruise agent or on-line as to how far the ship goes (can you tell how nervous i am?)answers range from "just out into international waters, about 25 miles" to "it goes as far as it can for one day and then turns around and comes back"
anyone out there been on one of these cruises?
also, while we have surfed the net & gotten plenty of info on food, activities etc. on the ship any advice from "cruise-chatters" will be greatly appreciated as i just discovered this site.
P.S. we are a "young 60" so the party atmosphere i've heard about should not effect us negatively.

I'm not really sure if they plan a set course for these cruises or not. It may depend on the weather as to which way and how far they go. Most likely they will cruise out into international waters and make very large circles very slowly and then come back.

Why does it matter how far they go? You will have a good time. Just remember that it will be a little different than a longer cruise in that you won't be stopping in any ports. So you will miss out on that part of the trip. But there will be plenty of other activities to keep you entertained.

I have been on several cruises to nowhere. They will go out far enough into International waters so they can open up the casino. The gift shop will be open, but they may or may not be selling liquor. They may also collect a tax on anything you buy in the gift shop. As Jim C says you will most likely just circle around in the International waters. You will not know the difference whether you circle around or go further. The cruise line will put on the best of everything. Lobster will be served on Carnival even on a one night cruise. They are trying to impress first time cruisers so you will see a little bit of everything in your short cruise. I enjoy cruises to nowhere. It gives me a chance for a little get away, and I get to see a different ship.
