I am sailing on the Carnival Triumph to New England and Canada. The ports are St. John and Halifax. What shore excursions can anyone recommend for these ports?

Hi cmjb4ever, and welcome to cruise-chat.com. I've done this itinerary on Carnival twice - on C. Destiny and C. Victory - and on other lines four other times. Halifax is among my favorite ports.

As with all shore excursions, a lot depends on what you enjoy to do. If you are into history, Halifax is a gold mine, between the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, the Pier 21 Immigration Museum, and the Citadel. Want to learn more about Titanic? (The real thing...not the movie.) Halifax was the site of the recovery, and there are three cemeteries in which many who perished are now buried. If you like pretty scenery, a trip to Peggy's Cove might be nice.

Same thing in Saint John. The reversing falls are a great attraction - you can brave them by boat, if you wish, or just observe from above. There are also excursions that take you out to areas in which you can see how quick the tidal action is.

Let us know more about what interests you and we can help you narrow your choices.

You can also do a search in our Ports of Call section for more info on these ports.

according to the news tonight they may want to add ice chipping on their shore exhursions as I see a cruise ship got stuck in the ice up in Canada...Anyone see that? I was thinking of Dave Beers cause I think he is booked for that one....

Dave likes ice for his cocktails hence he will make the best out of such a situation (Can't say as I blame him-it does sound like a great idea!)

I would much rather be on a cruise ship that is navigating the ice than to be navigating sheets of it by foot in my own neighborhood, as I've done the past two days.

One of our Canada/New England cruises was during late October several years ago. We made a port stop in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland, where they'd had a freak snowstorm a couple of days prior. The snow was completely cleared from the roads, and the air temperature was actually quite mild that day. But, there was still plenty of snow in the mountains, and the cruise line and local authorities put together a shore excursion for those who wanted to go into the mountains to play in the snow! Our tablemates from Hawai'i were thrilled!

Hi Cmjb,

When are you travelling to Canada? Like Lisa said , there is plenty to do in both Saint John and Halifax. Summer or Fall?
