Food and drink are the same on all Carnival (and most other lines) ships, really. Your meals and some beverages are included in the cost of the cruise. If you go to a specialty restaurant (I believe there are 2-3 on the Valor), you will pay extra. Iced Tea, coffee, lemonade, milk are included drinks.
If you want soda, beer, wine, mixed drinks, etc., you will pay extra. You could buy a soda card that covers soft drinks all week. . .I think it's in the $42-48 range for the week.
Note that you do not hand your server cash each time you get a drink. The charges will show up on your Sail Pass, and you'll pay at the end of the cruise via CC or cash.
Sodas and Alchol are extra. As well as some resturants on the ships. However the main dinning rooms and the snack grills and buffet lines are included in the cruise (and room sevice except for the tip). I agree with the beverage cards (on Carnival its called a Fun Fountain card) for the kids. Not too sure if it is worth it for adults unless you drink a lot of soda. The kid price for price for the card is less than for the adult (price depends on the length of the cruise) with the kid card for a week is about $27. The reason I'm not sure its worth it for the adults is that the cards are only good for glasses of soda, not bottled soda. Glasses run about $2 each and I think a bottle runs $3. So for the adult price of $42 you can get roughly 22 glasses of soda. Unless its all you drink, it is going to be difficult to consume that much soda. Plus you need to bring the card everywhere you go (Not too bad but still....) Whereas if you pay as you go, you can get soda bottles and recap them to take them around with you.
Obviously its your call, but I wanted to explain it so you could make an informed choice.

Yes they do. You can purchase them at any bar on the ship. I purchased one for my son and it was fantastic to have. And to your point, keeps sodas, or whatever cold for long periods of time. Plus they get a great souvenier(SP)??
Soft drinks, alcholoic beverages, and speciality restaurant all cost additional charges. On my last Conquest cruise, May 2006, I brought 12 pack of coke on board and store them in the fridge. Carnival has no problem at all. Also, bring extra-outlet for your electronic goods and waterbottle to refill your drinks.
