The music onboard depends from ship to ship and of course the clientele. It is usually hip hop, some house/dance, but sometimes they have theme nights. Like a 70's night for example so it will be a lot of disco, or a salsa night.
In terms of bringing music, again it depends on the DJ. You cannot plug anything into the mixer or sound system. I did take CD's that guests gave to me but had to listen to it at first. Carnival pays 3 different radio companies to supply them with music and they get CD's from them each month to keep the music up to date. I was advised by my cruise director to not accept CD's from guests as it is in fact illegal as Carnival has paid the companies for these CD's and therefore are allowed to play them to a group of people, the CD's the guests provide are not (legally speaking) allowed to be played to large groups. Of course in reality, you also have to meet customer expectations. As long as the CD's do not have any bad language in I would play them (the CD's received from the radio companies have all the swearing edited out).
Hope this helps, enjoy your cruise
