Yes, you need to be a Platinum member with Carnival or booked in a Suite. Here it explains the past guest program and different levels. Here is also another link to Carnival's Frequently asked questions.

10 cruises or (if i am right)penthouse suites..may be wrong on the penthouse,but i know if you get a suite you get vip check-in..dwayne will know 100%

VIP starts on your 10th cruise and is also for guest in suites category 11/12/SS.

Thanks for the info everyone... looks like I have a long way to go seeing as I am a 1st timer. If I enjoy the cruise I might get VIP by the time I am 55 haha

You are correct. Suites, Penthouse Suites, and Deluxe Penthouse Suites.
