I had to laugh at the way you phrased this question.
If you are thinking "assigned" like a bellperson at a hotel takes your luggage to your hotel room, the answer is NO.
Rather, picture longshoremen loading the thousands of pieces of luggage into giant bins (I believe separated by deck), loading these bins onto the ship, then the ship's crew unloads these giant bins into smaller bins/dollies. These smaller bins/dollies are then loaded into an elevator until the elevator is jammed packed, once on the proper deck, the bins/dollies are removed from the elevator, left in the elevator area and other crew members deposit the luggage in front of the proper cabin door.
Is this what you mean by "assigned"?

Yes this is what the ships luggage tags are for. Be sure all your luggage has one and it is filled out with your cabin number. Give your luggage (lock it) to the pier handler and it will show up outside your cabin sometime between 6 and 10 the first night. So bring with you anything you want for the first night. Also pack a spare set of cloths in your travel companions luggage. Then if one gets delivered early you have a change of clothes. Twice the chance of packing only for your self.
By the way, you didn't mention which port you are going out of. Certain ports have "friendlier" bellhops. When you get to the port, there are baggage handlers who take your bags to the boat. TIP THEM A BUCK A BAG!!! If you don't, you run the risk of your bags winding up in the ocean..not Carnival's fault. Am I right, everyone???
Yes, they are VERY friendly...but tip em anyway. It avoids the dirty looks you get if you don't. By the way, I personally think Port Canaveral is the nicest, friendliest port of them all!
How are you getting down there? We always drive. Usually a nice short trip...down 95. We're going out of Mobile in June. We're going I-95 to I-20 and then I-85. I figure the extra money you spend on a flight I can spend MUCH better on the boat!!
September??? Yikes... I'm going to be there in 9 days! Sorry.. I just had to rub it in a little... I'm already in vacation mode... I can almost feel the gentle swaying of the ship..
I am glad to hear the baggage handlers are friendly at PC.. Galveston's handlers seemed nice too. Miami is a crap shoot.
And I agree with you Steve, we normally go out of Galveston, and save the airfare, but you can't get to the eastern Caribbean from there and I think the cruise lines have the airfare thing figured out. They inflate the cruise price to a point where you can almost pay for airfare to another port..
