I am in my mid-twenties and I am taking my 18 year old sister on a cruise. This will be our first time cruising. My mom is worried about cruise/excursion safety (Cozemel). What are your thoughts on this? Have you ever had any problems?

Never ever leave each other alone in Cozumel. Cozumel is a party port and you don't want to get separated. If you're going to drink at Carlos and Charlies, Senor Frogs or any of those places don't over do it, but do have a great time.

If you are scheduled to take a tour the ship offers, you will be safe, but make sure you and your sister always know where each of you are going.

Invest in the "walkie talkies" they rent on the ship.

Do not invite any "gentlemen" to your cabin for a drink, etc. This is inviting trouble. Remember no matter how nice a "gentleman" may seem an invitation to your cabin is an invitation for sex.

When socializing, stay in public places. You can always find a quiet booth near the pizzeria for a serious conversation.

Crew members are not allowed in your cabin and passengers are not allow in their cabin.

Officers, entertainers and other staff memebers are allowed to go to the disco, but waiters, assistant waiters, and cabins stewards are not.

There are exceptions, but it all has to be prearranged and approved before boarding the ship.

Have a safe trip!

Cozumel is a very safe place for tourists. The local economy is based on tourism and the citizens know it - so they do their best to make sure nothing (such as crime, etc.) spoils things. There are certainly a number of bars, but the party generally stays in the bars and you don't see hoards of wandering drunks on the streets, as one might see in the French quarter of New Orleans for example.

But as in any port, you need to keep your wits about you and have some sort of rendevous spot established should you wish to split up for shopping, etc.

Like Dave said, and I agree from my experiences. Cozumel has always been a safe port for me.

They depend on the tourist dollar, especially now during re-building. They will ask you to come into their stores etc. But, as far as feeling safe walking around, I do.

Just stay in the tourist areas, and never a problem or even a slight threat of one. Totally comfortable for even a new Cruiser

One thing you will never have to worry about on Cozumel..A taxi back to the ship.
