I see if you go to carnivals passports requirements it says if on a close-looped cruise you can use a birthcertificate. We are taking a closed loop cruise in dec & are unsure about passports. has anyone cruised since after June 1 with a birth certificate or has anyone had problems? Please help me. I keep getting different answers from the govt.

Hi livijean.. welcome to Cruise Chat!

Dave posted an FAQ response on passport rules here.

You are getting different responses from the government because the rules are so confusing and really depend on HOW you travel. Its really best to avoid problems and get the passport. You still have time to do so for a December cruise. While technically you don't need one for a cruise, what happens if something goes wrong during the cruise and you have to fly home (say you miss the ship?) Or even if you were to miss the ship the first day and have to fly to catch up with it in the first port? Without a passport you can't do this...

Have you cruised recently using just a birth certificate? Carnival says that plenty of people still use the birth certificate if doing a closed loop cruise. Starting & ending at same US port. We are willing to take the chance I just want to make sure we understand the rules correctly.

would a passport card be acceptable for a cruise or do you have to have the book?

Since a passport card is superior ID to the birth certificate/photo ID, you can use the passport card for boarding and debarking the ship on a closed loop cruise. However, as I said in your other message thread, if you are going to go through the application process why settle for the card?

To answer your question... no I have not cruised on a birth certificate since the rule changes were first announced (and then postponed... then again and again...)

Our family has passports. I have seen others using birth certificates while checking in, but have not used them since my daughters used theirs in 2005

Hey guys, it has been forever since I have been on here but if I can throw in my perspective. In Canada we don't have a choice we need to have passport. I think that all of North America should look at this. The reason is that a Passport is never questioned. I keep mine with me even if I am traveling within Canada. You never know what could happen. I could not imagine if I got a boarder guard that decided to make my like mizerable what I would do. This way it will give no reason to question your passage. The world is going there anyways so I would get one. Just my two cents.

Dave is right: if you are going through the process you might as well get the regular passport; the card is not good for air travel or any other kind of cruise. If you think you might be going anyplace in the next ten years, get the passport.

I haven't personally cruised with just a BC since the latest change. I know some that have though, and didn't have any problems. My best advice is to get a Passport just in case a problem arises. As far as Carnival goes though, a BC is acceptable for boarding on a "Closed Loop" cruise.

the passport card is a good choice for me,since I never fly out of the country,it will get me on cruises starting and ending in the same U.S. port, and I can use it when I drive into canada once in awhile, its very easy to get in Michigan where I live, as easy as a drivers licence.10 mins wait.
