We're needing some help and opinions. We've sailed on the Miracle and the Crown and while both were very different, we enjoyed both.

So now we booked the Caribbean Princess but then saw the itinerary on the Carnival Destiny. There is a price difference in the two but I really don't want that to be the sole deciding factor so I won't mention what that difference is here.

What I want to know is if anyone has sailed both of these ships and can tell me their experiences. I'm reluctant to switch to the Destiny because of some negative things I've read about it, but I do like the itinerary a little more and I've heard that the Destiny has improved of late. So, if there's nothing SUBSTANTIALLLY different from the two (other than one is Carnival and one is Princess and taking those differences into consideration...) then we are thinking of making the switch. Can anyone help us out here?

Thanks.

Kim

Hey, KAWS!! Welcome to cruise chat!! Itinerary is important but it is not everything. Always trust your first instincts. If you feel that your on-ship experience would be better on Princess, then I say that should be your choice. I know, for the same length of cruise, Princess is more expensive. Think about what you are paying for and then consider if either of the ships contain certain activities and services that interest you more. There are definite pros and cons to any ship and itinerary. You just need to list those that pertain to you and make a judgment call. Either way, it's hard to go wrong if the end result is still a cruise. Let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Hi Kim, welcome to Cruise-Chat. We've sailed on both cruise lines, not those particular ships. I am a true fan of Princess and would not take a Carnival cruise over a Princess cruise. That being said, it doesn't mean that Carnival isn't good, I just think Princess is better. Have you looked for a similar itinerary on another Princess ship? Not only do I feel the service is better on Princess, and the food is better, and the ships are cleaner, but the rewards program is better. However, it would be totally up to you and no matter which you choose, it'll be a great experience. Best wishes!

I'm not certain about "better" but it definitely is different. I think Carnival spoiled me with the Miracle. That's a wonderful ship. The Crown Princess was lovely, no doubt about that. But we just felt more at home on the Miracle and felt we had more fun.

I'm not even sure why we feel that way. It's not like we're 20 something. Hubby and I are in our 50's but we did go and dance more and have more fun on Carnival.

We're back on Carnival for next March and my friend says the Liberty is a wonderful ship too. I totally trust her judgement. Hey - perhaps I can get her to go on Destiny this coming winter and then she can tell me if I need to switch!

Hubby is greatly leaning towards the Destiny but I think it's because of the lower price and I didn't want that to be the sole deciding factor. I know you definitely get more port time on Destiny and that's a huge plus too. I agree, however, that the rewards for past cruisers are in Princess' favour.

Kim, I have sailed on both ships. Caribbean Princess is a much prettier ship than Destiny and has a far superior pool options on deck. It really depends on what you are wanting to do onboard. Although I do use the pools, its not that big of deal to me. Honestly, we had a better time on Destiny than we did Carib Princess, but take in mind that we were in the "party" mood also.

That sort of sums it all up in a nutshell! It's the overall feeling that "I had a great and fun time!" that we're looking for.

I liked the idea of the freshwater pools on the Princess too but only wound up in one of them once in 9 days. They were way too crowded for my liking so we just didn't bother.

Thanks for your post.

That's why there are so many cruise lines, everyone has their own preferences. I do enjoy Carnival, but like you feeling at home on Carnival, I feel that way about Princess. After reading your posts, go for Carnival, you seem to have already answered the question. You liked Carnival better and had more fun--that's what cruising is for-enjoying yourself. Book it-Danno

well here are my two cents:
You look like you will like to try the Carnival Destiny insted of the one you already booked...
I was on the Carnival Destiny this summer during july 15 less than a month a go so in order to clarify some of your doubts
What do you want to know of this ship?
I will do all I can to help you...

Thanks for the offer to help. I guess I want to know things like:

All the pictures I've seen of the Destiny show the ship to be dark and dreary. Is it really or is it bright and cheery? I know the ship is older and that's ok, but is it run down?

How is the food? Is it really just ok like I've heard, and not up to Carnival's usual standards? Is there a specialty restaurant onboard too?

How about the staff? Do they all speak fluent English or will I have a hard time being understood?

What was embarkation/debarkation like? I've heard a few horror stories so need to know this for flight scheduling.

I know it's just one sailing, but how were the passengers and the attitudes on your sailing? Were the children running around and going crazy (or the adults for that matter) or was the general atmosphere just fun and vacation mode friendly?

Thanks and I hope some of my questions aren't offensive to anyone.

Kim
