Port of Galveston

I hope someone can help. We are booked on the Conquest from Dec. 17-Dec.24. We were wondering would it be a better idea to stay the holiday in Galveston or to go ahead and try driving home? It is about a 12 hour drive or so. Im not sure if the roads are going to be ok to drive on or if there is going to be alot of heavy traffic due to the holidays? Are there alot of accident near Galveston? I know this may sound like a dumb question but I thought I would get the opinion of some other people who are familiar with the Port of Galveston.

Christmas eve and Christmas day should be fairly light traffic. Sure there are people running about going to relative's houses and all, but no where near the amount of people driving home on a workday. Besides, the Conquest sails Saturday to Saturday.. which would be light traffic anyway.

It really depends on where you want to spend the holiday. You will most likely be off the ship by 9AM or so, at a 12 hour drive you could be home by 9 PM and have Christmas at home.

In the end it really boils down to your wishes.

We live right here in the area and have sailed out of Galveston a couple of times. We haven't done any cruises during the holiday, but the traffic should be ok ... you will probably encounter the heaviest traffic just north of Houston on I-45 if you will be going toward Dallas. If you are going out I-10, you can take our beltway 8 and get to I-10 either direction without going thru "town". If it is a 12 hour drive regularily, I would maybe figure on an hour extra driving time in the just in case situation. Also for consideration, the hotels in Galveston are usually a bit more expensive that in other areas and with the holidays might be full already.

we stayed at hawthorne suites great place and was not expensive for us we were seven people and it was a 3 bedroom suite with kithen and living room and balcony over looking the ocean $125.00 nite

We've done it both ways but are usually very anxious to get to our own bed at home.
