We now prepay our tips and think of it as just part of the cost of the cruise.
Then if we receive services above and beyond, we give what is a true tip.
We tip the room service delivery, piano bar entertainer if we request a song, the Club O2 director (because they are so good with our special needs son) etc.
We also tip the Maitre D because he makes special provisions for our special needs son.
Although after all these years, I have never truly known if my tip was in line...or an insult??
I know that there is no printed "standard" for the MD tip...but (and I know that not all folks tip them) IF you do....what is the proper amount?

LHP, I don't know what the standard tip is either. I don't always tip them unless I ask to be moved, or make some special request of them. I may have insulted them, but I usually tip them between $5 and $10 depending on what they do for me.
This is a very good question. I don't want to insult them either.
Gary, We were discussing what should be a recommended and appropriate tip for the Maitre'D. Dave just mentioned RCI's Headwaiter recommendation as a point of reference.
In regards to tipping, I am a new cruiser. My first cruise will be next April (2010) on the Carnival Dream. Is the auto tipping per person? I will be sailing with my wife and 2 young daughters (6 & 4). Does that mean I am looking at $280 per week? With the exchange to CDN funds, that is an extra expense that I will need to budget accordingly for. Thanks In Advance!!!

You can always ask that the auto-tips be removed or adjusted. However, the service is so incredible, you'll probably end up doing what we do and tip extra.
