We now prepay our tips and think of it as just part of the cost of the cruise.

Then if we receive services above and beyond, we give what is a true tip.

We tip the room service delivery, piano bar entertainer if we request a song, the Club O2 director (because they are so good with our special needs son) etc.

We also tip the Maitre D because he makes special provisions for our special needs son.
Although after all these years, I have never truly known if my tip was in line...or an insult??

I know that there is no printed "standard" for the MD tip...but (and I know that not all folks tip them) IF you do....what is the proper amount?

LHP, I don't know what the standard tip is either. I don't always tip them unless I ask to be moved, or make some special request of them. I may have insulted them, but I usually tip them between $5 and $10 depending on what they do for me.

This is a very good question. I don't want to insult them either.

RCI suggests 75 cents per day for the headwaiter.

I don't think it would be considered an insult, in fact, I'm sure they appreciate the recognition.

Thanks Dave, a Headwaiter seems close enough to a Maitre'D to me.

You are saying 75 cents a day.... That is $5.25 for a head waiter... sounds a little light to me.

Gary, We were discussing what should be a recommended and appropriate tip for the Maitre'D. Dave just mentioned RCI's Headwaiter recommendation as a point of reference.

In regards to tipping, I am a new cruiser. My first cruise will be next April (2010) on the Carnival Dream. Is the auto tipping per person? I will be sailing with my wife and 2 young daughters (6 & 4). Does that mean I am looking at $280 per week? With the exchange to CDN funds, that is an extra expense that I will need to budget accordingly for. Thanks In Advance!!!

Kevin, yes, tipping amounts are always per person, multiplied by the number of nights in the itinerary.

You can always ask that the auto-tips be removed or adjusted. However, the service is so incredible, you'll probably end up doing what we do and tip extra.
