Last time I cruised, cell phones would not work on the ship. Now, from what I read, they do work on the ship, is that correct? Does that mean that you can call only people on board or can you call back to the states?
Depends on the ship and your cell provider. Be aware that the charges for calls can be pretty pricey when calling from the ship and even the ports. Call your cell phone provider for more specific info.
Before you board, you need to take your cell phone to an authorized t-mobile dealer and have it "unlocked". They will have to add international coverage to your phone. Also, your phone needs to be able to operate in all three bands. Older phones typically do not have this capability. And finally, be aware that your calls will likely be about $2.49 per minute. If your phone rings and you don't answer it, you will still be billed for a minute of usage. My advice would be to keep the phone off until you are ready to use it. Calling from ports is significantly cheaper than calling from the open sea.
If any of you text message, these expensive charges also apply. My two older teens found that out when THEIR bill came in! Anybody going on the October 11th Bahamas cruise this year, on the Sensation? Didikay...

Lately, on every cruise that I go on, I always see some kids talking for hours on their phones. I just smile and keep walking. It's gives me some kinda sadistic thrill watching these youngsters dial away their inheritance.
