I just heard on the news that a couple returning from there cruise on the Carnival funship Inspirationwere busted by Customs for trying to smuggle drugs into the country. When I listened further to this story, I found out that they were caught with 200 pills of Hydrocodone. They purchased it on their cruise in Cozumel. I wish I knew more about the facts and the circumstances involved in this story. But it seems to me that 200 pills seems to be such a small amount. It could have easily fit into a plastic Coke-can size pill container. I suppose Hydrocodone has received allot of bad press in the past: Does it also go by the name "Oxy-Contin"? Anyway, I wonder if Uncle Sam is really making a big deal about this couple. Maybe they were chronic-pain sufferers and had a ligitimate use for the medicine? Now, that Customs has busted them for smuggling that medicine, will they also bust other people for any other medicine they try to bring back from Cozumel? When I was there (just one week before Wilma did her damage), there were pharmacies almost on every other block in dowtown Cozumel. It seemed that sellling prescription meds to Gringos was a good business there. Now with this recent bust, can Uncle Sam put the Kabash on it. Will I have to worry if I want to bring back some meds from Cozumel? Not too long ago, there was quite some discussion about prescriptions meds in Cozumel, on this message board. I would like to get everyones opinion about this.
Wow! I second your opinion that it seems like such a small amount. I, too, was under the impression that it was a pharmaceutical free for all over there- as it should be. Nobody wants a bunch of waste cases getting toasted on Codeine but it would seem better to address THAT issue, should it occur, than the supposed smuggling issue.
As usual, there must be a whole lot more to the story here....
Hydrocodone is not Oxycontin. The most common name you would find it is Lortab or Vicodin. On the streets it sells for $5-10 per pill. Yes, it is a big problem with addiction.
