The waiters, assistant waiters, and cabin stedwards do not get a salary from CCL. Their livelyhood depends on your tips alone. (I know because I married my waiter )
Thanks!! I thought that was the case.... Does the Cruise ship also take a cut? That is where I have an issue. A local Indian Casino has started a % on the bill, but they hold out a handling fee, I do not think that is fair.
When you buy your tickets thru Carnival it asks if you want to include the tips. If you put yes and pay for it when you buy your ticket, rather than on the sail and sign card, I wonder if the tip money makes it to the right staff?
The money does make it to the crew member. They get a print out of what they receive and if you put extra they also know who gave it.
For example, a friend of mine would not take the extra envelop of cash I wanted to give him so, I put it on my sail and sign account to make sure he got it. He knew because my name was next to it.
I'm just going to ask my stateroom attendant next week. That's the only way I'll know for sure. If he/she even thinks they keep part of his/her money, I'm giving cash.

I know because 1) I married my CCL waiter 2) my brother-in-law is a waiter for CCL 3) my husband's best friends are CCL waiters. 4) I've only cruised Carnival 26 times.
Obviously you don't believe me so go ahead and ask. Why would the cabin steward tell you his/her personal business concerning their wages? You are a guest.
I have seen too many business start collecting the tips for the employees. It is fine at first but, then the company deciedes it needs a cut or processing fee. It if is not happening now, watch... it will in time.
You might be surprised what employees tell!
I allow the ship to collect my gratuities, but give a little extra, to those who deserve it.
Another concern I have is this.
I do not know how taxes are paid by the employee, but it would seem to me that if I give the money to the ship to give out, it would become taxable income. i would rather he/she end up with more of it in his/her pocket.
They do not pay taxes. They are not U.S. citizens.
Those who are U.S. citizens (maybe 1% and usually are not waiters, assistant waiters, cabin steward, etc) Will get an end of year statement and will have to pay taxes at the end of the year on their salary. It is their responsibility, not the cruise line.
Cruisehappy, I'm sorry my comment made you angry. All I really care about is that they get exactly what I give them. If you say they do, that's excellent because they deserve every penny they are given.
