Ok did the West Coast several times and ready to go back to the Caribbean. We went once on the Fantasy to the Bahammas. For those of you that have been I am asking Princess Royal Caribbean or Carnival? 5 or 8 day? Eastern or Western? What months best. What ports is must see? Balcony or inside? Book way out or last minute? Where is the best buy? Need flights also. We just got back from the Mexican 8 day so have to wait a year out. boo hoo but ready to start planning again. Thought maybe some of you out there have some favorites to share.

Your questions are not easy to answer because of the generalities. Where you go and what cruise line depends a great deal on your particular taste. The only definitive answer I could give you is Balcony over inside stateroom. You can step outside at any time during the day or night and you don't even have to put a robe on in most cases.

(You might want to peek before you step out that way in case you are securely moored when sometimes other ships passengers can look right in at you at eye level!)

(Is moored the right word Dave?)

PS By the way, I think you are hooked on cruising!)

babydoll,

Do you live in California? If so, I'd go for at least 7 days on a Caribbean cruise to justify the long flights you will be taking. I like the western itineraries best, but you may be sick of Mexico by now so an eastern or a southern cruise may be more refreshing. Carnival currently does an 8 day southern from Florida, which is unusual, but it only hits three islands (St. Martin, St. Lucia, and St. Kitts) and has 4 sea days. You get to see more places if your cruise leaves from San Juan.

Thanks Dave your right we live in California and an Eastern or Southern would be better as we are Mexico-ed out. We want more ports and never thought of going out of San Juan. What ports does that offer? Guess long flight is to San Juan or Florida either way. Ken your point is good too on the balcony, and your right on the mark on us being hooked. So you guys helped in a Balcony,7 day and going out of San Juan...3 down and 50 questions to go. Can you get a good rate by booking way out? How far out can you go and although I see the rates always on the last minute prices(to fill the ship) where is the way out cruise prices? Would getting an agent be better or do it on our own? For us we are always looking for the best buy. We are NOT in the catagory to go in and plop down the $$ and say book us. We need good prices so we can go more.

I'd recommend a cruise specialist over trying to do it yourself. Although you posted this in the Carnival section, their ship out of San Juan (Carnival Destiny) is not as nice as RCI's Adventure Of The Seas. But as is often the case, Carnival has lower prices.

These cruises have different itineraries depending on the cruise date, but it is common to go to Barbados, St. Thomas, St. Kitts, Aruba, Martinique. Southern Caribbean cruises are "port intensive" in agent lingo, with maybe one day at sea and ports on all the other days.

I have sailed out of SanJuan twice and love the SOuthern Carib itineraries. September and October will be the least expensive months. Don;t worry too much about hurricane season. The ships can easily reverse itineraries to avoid bad weather. A "labor day" cruise on Carnival Destiny right now is $649 pp for a balcony. For about $100 more pp, RCCL Adventure has a great itinerary. The Crown Princess has some great itineraries at the same price. You will have a great time on either ship and sailing from SanJuan does give you many more port experiences. Just be sure and arrive the day before! You will have plenty of time to visit SanJuan the day of departure before boarding, as the ship departures from SanJuan are usually late evening.

hey thanks for the great advise.Dave port intensive sounds good to me. I like that. And Cruiseman good advise on the sept oct dates. Know a good place to stay in San Juan close to the ship? I will have to check on the time to fly to San Juan as it is 6 hours from here to Florida. Takes me a day just to recoup from long flights. Were taking another couple with us so is there discounts on the more you book with you?

Are there discounts for more people....no, not normally. I assume you will get two cabins, so the fares should be the same for you and your friends provided you book the same category.

As for hotels near the port - Sheraton, Hotel El Convento, Milano, Gallery Inn. Sheraton hotels have never impressed me, but it would do just for one night.
