I read with great interest the methods of preventing sea sickness, but really...which is better? The free Bonine tablets (free is always good) or do we need patches? First time on a cruise, and no problems with car or flying, but being on a ship may fel different and want to be prepared.

Bonine can leave some people "loopy",patches work faster and better, and I've found that ginger root works better than either!
I just returned from my 3rd cruise. The first 2 times I used the patches, because I have a tendancy to get motion sickness, and didn't want to chance ruining my vacation. This time I brought along the patches, but decided to give "non drowsy" dramamine a try. It worked wonderfully, actually I only took it for the first 2 days to get me used to the movement of the ship, and did not need it at all after that. The reason I decided to give the dramamine a try was because I tend to get blurry vision as a side effect from the patches by about day 4....I am assuming this is a normal side effect for the patch. the non drowsy version of the dramamine did not give me any side effect whatsoever!!
On our last cruise we used Bonine (non-drowsy formula) and it worked great. I have a tendency to get motion sickness and only one time did I feel movement and had no side effects. Enjoy!
Thanks everyone for the info...I wanted first hand experience. Am looking forward to this first cruise, just don't know why we waited so long to venture out to the seas!
another suggestion is the wrist bands you can wear. they are small, so you won't end up looking like a dork!!! i used these and you won't believe how well they work. i actually tried them on the way down there in the care b/c i get carsick and they worked great. they apply pressure to some point on your wrist to block the nausea. you can probably get them at walgreens, etc. plus, you can still drink and have a good time and not worry about mixing the alcohol with the meds. i would bring bonine as a backup, as well. happy sailing!!!
And don't forget...if all else fails,You can go down to the ships doc and get a shot (it cost my wife $5.00) and all it will do is make you sleep for a couple of hours. After she woke up, she was right as rain for the rest of the trip!! They even gave her a few motion sickness pills for the way back just in case (but she didn't need them). Bon Voyage....
