We travelled last weekend on the Carnival fascination,it was my daughters 16 birthday and we brought three of her friends to celebrate,I believed I had reserched which cruise lines had activities and I double checked by phoning the Carnival rep who assured me that there was a club called O2 who organised activities especially for this age group. On our first night on board we found the club and Olga gave the girls a brochure outlining the activities and it looked promising, she said there was 40 teens on board in the 15 -17 age group.
The girls arrived for the first activity but no Olga we never saw her again the entire weekend,we watched as other teens arrived and drifted off when they saw no one was running anything. I spoke to the director of childrens clubs who said he look into it but matters never improved. This is an age where you cant send them to bed at 10 but you may like me prefer not to have them wander the boat among drinking adults.
My girls resorted to endlessly having their picture taken as there was nothing else for them to do.My son was in the 12-14 yr group and they had a great time ,I found out on the last night that Carnival does not run the O2 club but subcontracts it.
We came home feeling cheated and depressed,I wish I had taken them to club Med or Disney cruise.I feel Carnival misrepresented their suitability for older teens ,I wonder would they have no one show up in the bars or Casinos as quickly. The teens were full fare paying passangers but were certainly treated like second class citizens .

Welcome to Cruise-Chat!

I am sorry to hear this. I have mentioned the Club in some previous posts.

I think they should have had it even if was few participants with school being in.

Have been on cruises when there were so many teens we were held up going to the Disco because the security was trying to get them out.

Same thing happened to us on the Ecstacy first week in October. Grandson got to go with us a last minute. He tried to go to several of the O2 listed activities and there was no one there ... he just kinda hung out with us or went to the arcade ... saw plenty of teens and saw several times with them going to the club with same results.

Sorry you had a bad experience on this cruise.

We just got off the Miracle and Angie (our Club O2 director) could not have been more perfect.

This was our son's 14th cruise (he started when he was 5) and Camp Carnival has repeatedly exceeded our expectations on the 13 different ships we have been on with him.

In the future, if the director does not show up for a scheduled activity ... I would march everyone up to the Purser's desk and find out why!

momofteens,

That is outrageous! Like you said, your older teens are full paying customers, just as you or I would be, and deserve more. And people wonder why our teens turn to drinking and drugs for entertainment! Can you imagine adults boarding a ship and having no entertainment for the full cruise? If this Club 02 director is contracted out, Carnival should fire these people, and hire people who are serious about entertaining 1 or 100 kids! In my mind, Carnival owes you another cruise! This time with entertainment and extra credit for your teenager! How disappointing!! I truly am sorry this happened to your family!

The director position is definately not subcontracted out. Someone does not know what they are talking about. It is the same entertainment position as a social host. Coca Cola merely partnered with Carnival and pays money to sponsor this "club" for advertisement. But the director is a Carnival employee.

As for Carnival owing anyone another cruise, I think that is a bit excessive.

We just got off the Miracle and Angie (Club O2 director) could not have done a more perfect job. Daniel on the Spirit was equally good.
The Pride director was a hoot. I can't remember the name, but they had a group of about 25 that rocked!!

LHP,

Sounds like your teenager was very fortunate, and had a Club 02 director that did a good job. That's wonderful! You got what you paid for, and your vacation was a huge success for everyone. All 14 times. Wonder how you would feel if the tables were turned? Nothing personal, but I know I would be very upset if this happened to my family. Sure, I would try to correct things while on the ship, and surely this mother did, but evidently it still didn't work out for them. What a shame! I'm sure there was alot of planning and excitement going in to their trip, as with all of us, and then they were disappointed. You'd kind of feel like some of your money was wasted. This mother is obviously very upset, and I really don't blame her.

Now, I do have this question. Aren't these clubs just glorified baby sitters, or should I say teen sitters. Not that there is anything wrong with this. I certainly don't think kids should be left unattended on board. And, when this one director screws up his or her job, isn't there someone else on board to fill in? What if this "director" gets sick or something...aren't there helpers or assistants to step up? Or, are these kids just left out? You know, when the kids aren't happy...it really is a bummer for the parents...especially when on vacation! I'm sure it hampered the adult plans!

Maybe a "free" cruise seems excessive...it won't happen anyway...but this Carnival employee should have a dishwashing job, not an entertainment job!

I guess I just have compassion for this family...not everyone has 14 perfect cruises...glad that your son has....but the next one may not be so perfect..hope you feel that 14 out of 15 is ok.

Hope you have a great cruise in December! Sincerely! What do they do for you on a Christmas cruise?

Annies: Sorry, but I think momofteens is being a little extreme to make a blanket statement "Don't put teens on Carnival", and say there was nothing for the teens to do but have endless pictures taken. Maybe you hit the nail on the head in your statement of "What happens when someone gets sick?" Indeed, Did momofteens really pursue why Olga wasn't at her station? She says she spoke with the "childrens director". What childrens director? Of the younger children? That person has nothing to do with Olga. Momofteens should have spoken to the Cruise Director or went and spoke to the Pursers desk to find out why Olga wasn't at her post. Momofteens says nothing to do but take endless pictures? What about the 9 hole miniture golf, dance classes, trivia games, virtual world arcade, shuffle board, volleyball, ping pong, basketball, jogging or walking on the track, the Gym, books and games in the library, swimming in the pool and the slide. If the girls weren't interested in any or all of these things, then that's not Carnival's fault. If Olga was neglectful and not doing her job, then yes, she needs to be relieved. But if she was sick, or something else happened then that's a different story. It sounds very unusual for this to happen. According to Carnival's website, "Olga" isn't even the name of the O2 club director. Maybe their website isn't up to date, or maybe something did happen to cause this unusual situation.

I agree, plus surely the cruise had ports. It is unfortunate though. But if this happens to anyone else go the Social Host, then to the Cruise Director for the answers.
