Long Beach Carnival Pier

Can Anyone tell me about the new Carnival pier in Long Beach? I read you can register for your cruise onboard the Queen Mary after 08:00 hours.
Then board at your leisure after 12:30 Hours. Do you have to Pay to board the Queen Mary to do this? Do they have a special section to do this?

I read on other message boards that this set up is a breese. Just get there early and register on the Queen Mary, Maybe take the tour and then walk on board. That sounds alot easier than San Pedro, where the lines were taxing.
