Gabbie, This may have been covered but I didn't see it. Sail and Sign card: It can be used for your safe BUT the magnetics on it are not as detailed as those on any other card you may own and the safe can sometimes mess it up and then it won't work as a room key. Also only the very exact same card that locked it will open it. So your sail and sign is not the same as your cruising partner. My wife and I use an expired card of some kind, My AAA card is a good candidate, then we hide it in the room so we can both access the safe even if we are not together. Even if someone were to find the card, unlikely, and were dishonest enough to want to steal something, they will not know it is the safe key. Works for us.

Also you can review your balance on the TV in your cabin rather than ask at the pursers, It was easier for me that way to keep track of my card and also my Childrens cards.

have a great sail

oh and Don't forget to see the big Dance shows. They are really good. Try to get there early to sit on the first level, center, but at least 6 rows back.

I was on a Carnival cruise and used the safe inside my stateroom (cabin). I discovered that the wider the magnetic strip on the back of the card, the better it worked with the safe.

I first used a Kinko's Xerox-copy card. It has a narrow strip on back. I kept getting a card read error message from the safe. So, I then used my Florida Drivers Licence (which has a 1/2" wide magnetic strip on the back) and it worked perfectly everytime. You would swipe the card once in the reader on the safe, and the dead-bolt will protrude (locking the safe). With the same card, swipe the reader again, and the dead-bolt will retract (opening the safe).

This is a picture taken of the safe in my room, last year, onboard the Carnival Glory. On the door of the safe, you will see a plastic structure with a diagonal slit on it. That slit is where you will slide your card. The shiny metal circle on the door is the dead bolt that protrudes or retracts opening or locking the safe. The volume of space inside the safe, can be compared to the volume of space in a large shoebox.

Also, as you see in the photo above, you will encounter bottles of water and soda left in your cabin. I would leave them alone. They are not for free, and tend to be quite overpriced.

The same goes for using the phone in your cabin to call home. They will charge you anywhere from $7 to $10 to call home or recieve phone calls from home on that phone.

Hi Gabbie,
Welcome to Cruise Chat and the wonderful world of cruising.
Your so fortunate to have found this site. I never knew it exhisted until we went on about 14 cruises. The people here are so helpful and so nice.
I'd like to suggest if anyone in your group takes medications, that they carry them in a carry on bag. I also put my jewelry, toiletries and about 2 extra days of clothes in my carry on.
Have a Great time on your cruise.

Hi Gabbie,
I forgot to mention that when I was on Carnival Glory this September, 2007. I brought the VIP cards from the Hilton Casino. There was 3 of us in our room and I had 3 cards, so it worked out Great. We all had the opportunity to open the safe.
I did have 3 cards from other casino's but some of them didn't work.
I hope this helps.

Ok, I am a little confused...I need "cards" to get in the safe? How do I get them, and do they go by room numbers? How do they work?

Hi Gabbie,
I'm sorry I confused you . You will find on some ships the safe has numbered buttons and you have to punch in your code. Everytime you or anyone in your cabin want to get into the safe you put in the 4 digit number.
Now Glory and a lot of other ships you have to swipe your credit card on the door of the safe to get the safe opened.
There was 3 of us in our cabin in September. Rather then use one persons credit card to swipe and lock the safe, we used the VIP cards from the Hilton Casino (you know the card you put in the slot machine to accrue credit and get points to get comp from the casino). I had 3 of them so we each had one. If we would have used my credit card and one of the others sharing my cabin wanted to get into the safe, they would have to hunt me down to get my credit card go back to the cabin to open the safe.
On one of my other cruises someone had mentioned that they used their card from the Food store and it opened her safe.... So I got the idea from her and brought different VIP cards from different casino's that I have been in and as I stated earlier the Hilton Card worked. You have to had a card with that strip on the back to swipe open the safe in your cabin.
You don't have to buy any cards. You can just use your credit card.
I hope I have explained it a little clearer for you. If not, please let me know.
Sandy P
