I understand that these are handed out to VIP guests only. Can unused coupons be used at a later date or just on that specific cruise? And are they only good for that person - do they have your name on them?

I assume you are talking about the coupons for "up to $100 off" a Carnival cruise? These aren't handed out solely to VIPs. Any prior Carnival passenger will get things such as these, either in the Carnival newsletter or by e-mail. It is nothing particularly special in my view. Just a marketing tool and I think a good agent will get you the same price for a particular cruise with or without a coupon. Many people on eBay are shameless in what they'll sell.
In fact, as I was typing this I got an e-mail from Carnival offering me special rates for fall cruises "this Wednesday only!"
Okaaay - Okaaay I am going to go out on a limb here and say that YES! I was a sucker and purchased some of those coupons off of ebay when I first started cruising.
They are absolutely worthless. Take it from me. A Carnival Rep can get you a better price.
Don't waste your time.
This was an actual Coupon Book with many different coupons to use at different shops and I believe BOGO offer's. There was a coupon I was actually looking for and interested to see if I could use being a first time Carnival cruiser... 1 golf club rental for the purchase of another (for my husband and son). A co-worker said she had seen this coupon book on the last cruise she took. I believe a lady received a certain discount for a handbag or something. Just curious if anyone knew anything about them. I was told from a TA that they were given to "repeat" customers.

Well I am a repeat customer - 6 of my last 8 cruises over the past 4 years have been with Carnival and all in suites - and I've not received a book of coupons such as you describe. I guess I haven't made the grade yet!
I guess I'm confused; what coupon books were the subject of the big debate a while back? It was all about the ethics of reselling books that were given to individuals.
MicheleT, this was the reason for my comment, "here we go again!" That debate seemed to go on ad nauseam.
