Kelly Method...how soon is too soon?

I was reading about the "Kelly Method" and am interested in trying it. We cruise in May, is it too soon to think Carnival would have already assigned us a room? (We booked a guarantee.) How long before we set sail would you recommend we try the Kelly Method?
