Here is why it is impossible to go from NOLA to the Gulf in two hours. The channel (MRGO) is 67 miles long. For a cruise ship to get to open sea in two hours would require it to average 30 knots while traversing the channel.
At that speed, Carnival could add a new excursion....tubing behind the ship down the ole Mississippi!!! (I did not know if that is fast enough to water ski...I don't know my "knots" to "miles per hour" conversion.)
sss....go with the late seating. You wil most likely want to be on deck when leaving each port, not just New Orleans. Have a great cruise!

You can ski comfortably at 25 mph so 34.5 will work. Better to use a wakeboard instead of ski's, I'm sure there would be quite a wake for that......and don't fall, it might be awhile before the ship turns around to pick you up. Good information on the channel length. I will be traveling NCL in April out of NOL as well. Doing the pre-cruise city tour, and looking forward to Bourbon St.
Wow.. I had no idea NO was that far inland... Of course I and sure a lot of that 67 miles is twists and turns... But still, that seems like a long way.
So, if you are not in open water before bed time, is the casino not open that first night? Assuming they can't open the casino or shops until the ship is in international waters? or can they open the casino and shops as soon as they leave the port? I have not sailed from NO, but it is close enough that I might some day soon. But, if I'm not going to be able to hit the casino that first night, that woul dbe terrible.
Don't miss Johnny's Po-Boys @ 511 Louis St. in the French Quarter. The BEST. Read about it on Frommers.com. We loved cruising out of N. Orleans. We went in Feb '05. on Conquest, right before Katrina hit. I wouldn't hesitate to go again.
Thanks for the tip A:ndrea! I used to travel to NOL on business and always loved the city. I will check out Johnny's. I have been to several places, but that isn't one of them. Do you know if Pat O's is open yet for meals on the patio?
Thanks for the info. I did see where it was open, but couldn't tell if they served food or not. I will definately have a hurricane for you....and one for me! I think that is about all they will serve me Getting excited to leave now. I'm planning on booking my snorkeling through a website too vs the ships.
