Questions on Shore Excursions & other stuff

Going on my first cruise on July 1st to Eastern Caribbean on Triumph. Is it usually a good idea to book shore excursions BEFORE you get on board?
I want to take hair straightner should I take a "power strip w surge suppressor" and can I get that at say Home Depot or Wal Mart?
Also can you get away with taking alcohol on board??

We are also taking the Triumph but we are sailing Sept 9. You do not need a power strip with a surge suppressor, but iI would buy it anyway to keep for home use. You can sneak booze on board. Either put it in your luggage in the middle so it does not break. Or put it in another bottle and carry it on with you. Vodka in a water bottle. Gold rum in an Apple juice bottle etc.
