Formal Night attire
What are the ladies wearing to formal nights? I was going to take quite a fancy outfit but am wondering if I will feel out of place. Are capris dressy enough? Are guys wearing sports jackets or suits?

I dont think capris will be right for elegant night. I think something more dress would be better. a dress shirt and tie with dress pants are fine for men. up to the man to decide if he wants a jacket.

Formal night is picture taking night--how good do you want to look in your pictures?

While Carnival has relaxed its dress code to allow them into formal night, on the last few cruises I have been on, most people still dress up. You will never be OVER dressed though so if you want to dress up, do so. You could get away with capris if you didn't want to where a dress but like Sonny said.. they take lots of elegant night pictures which we use as our family portraits so I say dress up.

I have a "little black dress" that I pack for formal nights. Some jewelry and/or a scarf, black sandals - Voila - dressed up.

Thanks everyone,

Dress up it is! The only reason I asked was because I read something here on this forum which made me think the dress policy was really relaxed. We haven't cruised in 2 years so I wondered if things had changed in that time. The pictures don't matter to me. Capris are fine for casual nights?

capris are perfect for casual night, but on elegant night you really cant over dress.

You may see more relaxed dining attire on some cruises vs others depending on the port of embarkation. Not opening a can of worms, but it is true. I take the middle road with it and wear dress slacks, pressed collared shirt with tie, and a blazer for Cruise Elegant night. :)

Haven't seen many women wearing the gowns as in the past lately. Most seem to wear smart looking dresses. Just my take on it. :)

While it is true that some cruises are less dressy than others over all....

the good news is that a lady can get as dressed up (or not) as they wish.

You will see everything from Tuxedos to khakis for men on elegant night.

So you won't be out of place at all....

I've been on two cruises in which honeymooners brought their wedding attire and had formal pix taken in wedding gowns and tuxes . . .
