well if it is not to track spending habits, then why are they pushing so hard to get people to insert the card in the machine. I dont think it is just so they can reward points.
It is to track your spending habits. Just those in the casino though. Another reason they push to put the card in is because they want people playing to get use to the player banking system. This is in part is for labor cost savings. Notice you don't see people in the casinos filling up the machines with coins anymore. No people carrying up buckets of coins to be counted and cashed in anymore. No stacks of rolled coins at the cage anymore.
Another reason is the psychological part of the point count to get you to play more. In the case of the new "On Us" Drink Program I am sure it will work to do just that. "Honey, give me another $20, I almost have enough points to get free drinks".
And since the card is only good for free drinks "while playing in the casino" I'm sure some folks will play more to get the free drinks. Not saying everyone that plays indulges in libations, but a good many do.
Just my opinion of it after admitting to spending alot of time in the casinos.
By the time you have "earned" the 1500 points required to get the "free" drinks, you have spent more than you could have possibly drank buying them straight from the bar. And as Dwayne pointed out, once you get to that level you still have to be playing in order to get the drinks... so more money.
Las Vegas and other casinos learned a long time ago that if they offered free drinks that people would stay at the casinos longer and drink more in then in time spend more... Its the same game here, but why the 1500 point level I don't know. i would bet that they have been hearing the complaints about not offering free drinks that they figured this would appease the serious gamblers while they would not lose money on the people coming in and playing a little money just to get a drink. I do think the 1500 point level is way too high but then they have a caged customer... where else are you going to go?
Good point Jim! My alcohol bill has never been $1,500 before!
Theoretically though you could get the points without losing any money. IF you are playing the right machine. I played the same machine for 3 hours once and still walked away even to a little better. But there have been those like Seymor...Feed Me!
This whole thing brings up another question. I usually tip the casino servers extra. Suppose one does get the 1500 points, how much would be a decent tip? In the past when the servers have brought me a beer and said it was from the Hostess or Manager I didn't tip them on the spot because I didn't have any singles on me. I would however tip them the last night, as they were the ones serving me all week anyway.
how much do you have to spend to get to the 1500 point level? Something about this just doesnt sound right. Carnival even has the employees remind you to put the card in. They want that card in the machine for a reason! I dont think they save money by not putting coins in the machines. The employees are there anyway why not let them put the money in. I am a very trusting person, but something about this is wrong, I am just not sure what it is.
I guess I don't understand what you are worried about macmom... what information could they possibly get from you from the s&s card that they don't already have? I can assure you that you don't win anymore or less based on the cabin type your in... which really isn't on the card anyway. The only information imprinted on the card is your folio account number and your name.
Well....maybe it worked on me anyway! Called to book an October cruise and ended up also booking one for next month. Cruise withdrawals can be brutal.

About the only gambling we do on a cruise ship any more is entering the $20 slot tournaments. Rita made it to the finals once on a Celebrity ship and placed fourth. She won a high rollers shirt. It would have been cheaper just to buy it in the gift shop. I don't think free drinks after 1500 points would be much of an incentive to get us back to playing quarter slots again on a cruise ship.
